A liberal arts college is focused on studying liberal arts. This is different from, say, a research university (Harvard, Oxford), which would focus on research and developing new, undiscovered knowledge, or an institute of technology (MIT, ETH Zurich) which specializes in science and technology.

Actually, “for” in this case means “because” or “since”. You can use it in this manner too. For example:

She worried about her exams, for she had a hard time understanding the lessons.
