Pointless implies without a purpose/futile. For example,
-It is pointless to keep fighting. Just face it, you’ve lost. (You could also use “useless” here though)

So, useless could be used synonymously with pointless with the meaning “futile/without purpose” but pointless can’t be used synonymously with the word useless to mean “unhelpful.” Hopefully I didn’t make that confusing! 😅

A: Useless means it has no use. Idle means stationary, motionless, and hence by extension can be said to have a synonymous meaning, when saying someone is idling around (i.e. not doing anything)

Examples: This broken screwdriver is useless.

This game has been used, so it's discounted.

useless = cannot be used (broken, pointless)
needless = unneeded (it can be used, but no one wants or needs to use it)
OR needless = gratuitous ("needless violence" is violence for no reason, violence just because you want to be violent)
