How do you say "Se nos ha muerto el perro"/"Morreu-nos o cão" in English?

If you do not speak Spanish and Portuguese, I will try to help you. The first sentence is in Spanish and the second one in Portuguese. They both mean something like "Our dog has died", but the idea is expressed in another way, we use the dative.

So I would like to know if these English sentences express that idea in a more precise way.

1. The dog has died on us.
2. Our dog has died on us.
3. The dog is dead on us.
4. Our dog is dead on us.

It's okay to use either Our or The, depending whether you want it to sound intimate or distant.

Our dog died on us
The dog has died on us
The dog has gone and died on us

These are all common ways of raising a sentence like this, but you need to know something important about this manner of phrasing. It is very, very, very informal. When you say it this way about a dog dying, it's almost like you're making a joke of it.

Having said that, I grew up in Australia and this is exactly how someone in the part of Australia I know would talk about their dog dying. Making a joke about it, but still being sad about it. However, people from other parts of the English-speaking world are not like that. So you need to be careful.
