关于英语 (美国) 的问题
I saw a movie called G.I. Jane. There's a scence where the main character says "S*ck my d*ck" and it seems this scene makes up the whole point of this movie. But I don't understand why it is so significant that woman says it. I suppose some sort of mentality or gender related history might have to do with the fact that this scene attracts American audience. What are they?

I haven't seen that movie in a long time, but here goes my interpretation. The character is a woman and is currently at a low point in the movie. By taking on a male characteristic, she is aspiring to gain power and control over her situation. Since masculinity is associated with action and power, but femininity is not. It's a turning point in the movie for her. And It speaks on larger societal feminist issues.
Frankly, it's pretty cool. I could never say it, but I would admire a woman that did.

Thank you for answering. Hmm, I don't fully understand why it's cool to say that phrase. Do you mean that women in America generally feel inferior to men and want to become like men so that they have the same power as men? And could you tell me what this "power" is more specifically?

It's a cool phrase in that context. I've never heard anyone say it in real life, though. This is all hard to explain, if you never been exposed to feminism studies and such. The character isn't trying to become like a man. It's symbolism. She is trying to assert herself in a man-dominated world. She's the only woman in the team. She's also the first woman, isn't she?Can you imagine what that must be like? Why do you think there are mostly men in the military and not women? What kind of characteristics do you think of when you think of the military? Strength, aggressiveness, etc. Do you think of women as being those things? Now, isn't it cool when a person breaks through all those barriers and gender roles? That is what the character is doing when she says that. She is breaking through societal barriers. And she is growing as a character which is a turning point, too.

Breaking through physical barriers is cool. Maybe it's like flying when you don't have wings. I sometimes wish I had three hands when I'm busy. Or if I needed only three hours to sleep instead of seven. I think, probably for feminism, it's important to have physical strength and aggressiveness that men have. I remember watching a news a while back in which a Japanese guy threatened in front of media to set fire on himself in opposition to the Japanese government's decision that his boat house in the sea is illegal. Then the report showed a guy living in New York said its crazy and he couldn't understand why the guy had to risk his life for living in his boat on the sea. So maybe I'm like that guy from New York who doesn't understand the value of a person who risk his own life for his own value of living where he wants. But I wonder if feminism is desperate. Again, I don't really understand feminism. That's probably my most fair and honest answer.
Maybe that's partly because I'm from a culture were gender difference or appeal is less practiced. Like I stated earlier (as I want to have 3 arms or only 3 hours of sleep), I complain about physical constrains and put the blame on God or whatever, well, maybe, on the path we took for human evolution? But to tell you the truth, a woman saying "S*ck my d*ck" is a little bit scary for me. Although I understand it's a symbolic expression from the culture of Shakespeare (based on an assumption that the US is based on English culture), I wouldn't know how to respond to that. The macho guys in the movie seemed to accept her enthusiasm after hearing that phrase from her and I think that its nice (to be accepted/understood, or to conquer men's strength and overcome something?). But I still don't really understand her feelings or the mentality of American women who challenge the other gender. Maybe you need to be American to understand that. But it's a little bit scary to hear that phrase from woman. I guess this is like me saying "Touch my boobs" and I can imagine that sounds, if not scary, creepy to women. I mean, I wonder what happens if we put blame on each other. We are only men and women on this planet. I wouldn't want to fight with other entity to share the same land and life on the same planet with. I want to cuddle woman and feel fine together. I don't want to be challenged because I'm a guy. Because men are victim of human society as well as women are. I would really be troubled if I were told to s*ck her d*ck. I could at least somehow respond "I can't s*ck your d*ck because you don't have one but I can bake you a great apple pie. Would you be happy eating with me each piece of the pie that I bake for you?" I guess the Demi Moore character in the movie would probably give me the American finger. That would make me convince that maybe American life is harder than the Japanese one.
I know that mind is always stronger than physical body. So GI Jane's mind is fighting for something through a physical world which in this case, is military. Hmm, mind fights in physical world...? Anyway, I think I won't be able to understand what you call societal barriers. Maybe I need to be an American woman to understand that. There are in Japan too problems like the wage of women being still relatively lower than the men's especially in traditional or large companies where people are working like doing gymnastics or like soldiers. (Even though Japanese men are not as macho as American men are at all. Ahaha) But it's not as serious to that extent, eh, as far as I'm concerned. Or, maybe that's because Japanese women are unnecessarily too submissive to men? I'm seriously starting to worry if Japanese men are giving enough love and care to our women.
Anyway, this is very interesting exchange and I appreciate your comment. It's rare to be able to hear the voice from real American about this topic.
