但 is simply a short version of 但是, they are synonyms and can be used interchangeably.

但对 is not a word. 对 goes with 中国文化 and functions as a preposition meaning “about, with regard to”:

对中国文化
about Chinese culture

And yes, 了解 can be used either as a transitive verb (followed by a direct object), or an intransitive verb with the preposition 对… located before it.

viene tradotto come: " il professore spesso dice A noi" ? --> "对" = "A"
