第二句是不对的，因为“一直”和“了”不能一起使用。

@Cobbit Here the sentence has a different structure as yours. Yours only contains one clause (one subject, one predicate), the sentence in the book on the other hand has a main clause which in turn contains a subordinate clause. Therefore, 一直 and 了 are in two separate clauses and modify two different predicates, in this case it is of course not a problem to have both. But in your sentence, both are modifying the same predicate, this is absolutely impossible because 一直 denotes a continuous state while 了 indicates the completion / change of an action.

一直 modifies 不知道, while 了 modifies 到哪儿去.

Your sentence: 一直 and 了 both modify 不明白 (incorrect)
