they mean the same thing, but I believe the word prison would be used in any official reference. for example:
Dartmoor Prison
Her Majesty's Prison Service
A prison guard

no difference. there may be something buried in the mists of time but it is not part of the current usage so either is fine.
incidentally, jail can also be spelled gaol (note it's not the same as goal). Despite the different spelling they are pronounced the same. You might read gaol but in writing, use jail.
