"он с голоду помрёт" -> he will die of hunger

Why is голод in the dative here? I've never seen the dative case follow the preposition c before. Why is it not "с голода"?

Умереть с голоду - разговорное устойчивое выражение. Именно с таким окончанием и таким предлогом. Нейтральный вариант - умереть ОТ голодА.
Еще примеры таких выражений: со страху, с перепугу, со смеху.

Genitive:
standart еndings for masculine nouns - А/Я.
special endings for masculine nouns - У/Ю. It is a form for colloquial speech (has a touch of old Russian speech).
