@studiousme words like cellphone, mobile phone, and telephone are really outdated, nowadays we just say phones haha.
you could say either one and i would understand what you mean, but when i hear “i slid my hands into my pockets” it makes it sound like you are going to grab something in your pocket, or you’re putting them in there for a short amount of time.
when i hear “i put my hands in my pockets” i think of you just putting them in your pockets and keeping them there.
don’t worry about these small differences because you’ll pick up the meanings through conversation overtime! you could say either and people will understand perfectly

@studiousme all 3 can be used but number 3 sounds the most natural

@kitty991 Thanks. What’s the difference between “slip into” and “slip on” when talking about putting on a piece of clothing?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme both mean the exact same thing, but they can give off a slightly different feeling to a native speaker.
when i hear “slip into” i think of slipping into pants or underwear
when i hear “slip on” i think of slipping on a shirt
both can be used with any sort of clothing though don’t worry

@studiousme “slip off” can be used if you are taking a piece of clothing off, for example:
i slipped off my shirt/i slipped my shirt off
a more common way to say something like this is simply:
i take my shirt off.
as for slipping on, it is more common to say “i put a shirt on/i put on a shirt”
slip out of can be used the same way, but there are other ways to use it too! for example you can say “i slip out of my pants” to say “i take my pants off”
you can also say something like “i slipped out of my job to come see you”
meaning i left work to see you

@kitty991 Alright. Thank you! So “put on” and “take off” sound more natural to you than “slip on/off” and “slip into/out of”, right?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme either one can be used but yes “put on” and “take off” sound more natural in my opinion that’s correct

@kitty991 Got it. Can I ask you one more question? Do you guys often place “on”/“off” before or after the clothes?
put on my pants
or
put my pants on?
take off my pants
or
take my pants off?
put on my pants
or
put my pants on?
take off my pants
or
take my pants off?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme i would say both sound fine, it really just depends on the person. 50% of people say it before the clothes and 50% say it after, whichever you prefer. i sometimes say both, but i personally usually put “on” and “off” after

@kitty991 That makes sense. You know, I don’t mean to grab anything in my pocket, I just want to talk about my standing posture. So the most natural is “I *put* my hands in my pockets”, right?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme you could use i put my hands/i slid my hands into my pockets, both would be understood about your posture, but in my opinion yes the most natural way is to say “i put my hands in my pockets”

@kitty991 Thank you! Just to confirm, if I just say “I slid my hands into my pockets”, would people think I’m talking about the coat/jacket pockets? Because I didn’t include “pants” in this sentence.
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme you don’t need to specify which pockets. no need to say “pant pockets” or “coat pockets” unless you really want to specify which pockets you’re talking about. if you said “i slid my hands into my pockets” it would sound like you put them in your pockets to grab something. you don’t need to say “pant pockets” unless you want to specify/clarify you’re talking about your pant pockets

@kitty991 Gotcha. Thank you. But if I want no ambiguity, it’s fine to include “pant” in that sentence, right?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme yes! you can definitely include “pant” if you want no confusion, however it is unnecessary and sounds more natural just to say “pockets”. you can definitely include “pant” if you want to clarify or specify

@kitty991 That makes sense. Thank you! I also wanted to ask you about a grammar point. My English teacher said “pant” can’t mean a kind of clothing, it can only mean “to breathe quickly with short breath”. Only “pants” (adding the S) can refer to that type of clothes. So it’s not correct to say “pant pockets”, I need to say “*pants* pockets”. What do you Americans think?
- 英语 (美国)
@studiousme yes your english teacher is correct! “to pant” means to breathe very quickly, however, you will notice with a lot of english speakers, we do not realize such tiny differences such as “pant pockets” or “pants pockets” you will hear both (even though pants pockets is correct) a lot of people in america will say pant pockets, even though this isn’t correct haha
