if i want to ask someone what they’re arguing with someone about, does it make sense if i say 吵什么架? i said this to my friend but i don’t know if it makes sense

It makes sense but it means "Why are you guys still arguing? Calm down". For your purpose, you would need to say "你们吵的是什么东西?"
