“Dov’è?” means just “where it/is/she is?”.
“Dove si trova?” means “where it/is/she is located?” and it’s usually used to refer to places/locations (e.g. “where is the Empire State Building located? In New York City!” = “Dove si trova l’Empire State Building? A New York!”, whereas “dov’è l’Empire State Building?” is usable when you are looking for it and you don’t find it e.g. because you’re searching for it on a map or if the Aliens have teleported it to another planet…),
even though it’s also usable to refer to people/objects we really don’t know where they are (e.g. “ora dove ti trovi? Al cinema?” = “ora dove sei? Al cinema?”= “where are you now? At the movies?”, “dov’è la pentola?” = “dove si trova la pentola?” = dove sta la pentola?” = “where is the pot?”, etc).
When we refer to abstract concepts it’s more natural to use just “dov’è”, e.g. “where is the freedom in this country?” = “dov’è la libertà in questo paese?” (meaning “there is no freedom in this country”).
