Increasing numbers of people are (wintering/summering/ *springing / *falling) abroad.

Looking at the dictionary, I think only summer and winter can be used in this context, is that correct? If correct, why don't spring and fall have the same usage?

There are two reasons why you can only use this form for winter and summer.

Firstly, people don’t do the same kind of holidays in autumn or spring. Summering and wintering have a particular meaning – you are escaping the extremes of weather.

Secondly, springing and falling are both words which have completely different other meanings, meanings which are extremely common. It would sound ridiculous to say springing or falling, if you were talking about a holiday.

But as I said, such holidays do not exist. The weather in autumn and spring is mild – therefore, there is no need to take a holiday to escape it.
